    Hi,

I just built a PC for my nephew and installed window 7 ultimate trial for him. I want to buy Window 10 to upgrade, but unsure which version will work with it. I leaning toward home, because it's a lot cheaper. Do I need to reformat the hard drive if I get the home version? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but when I try to google it only show results about the free upgrade which I can't get.

If you have the option go for Pro, it can be customized a bit more than Home.
Home lacks gpedit.msc and probably other essential things.

You could better install 7 Ultimate, activate by DAZ Loader (make sure to install at least the lan driver) and upgrade to 10 Pro, then you have a legit windows 10 pro for free (HWID).

Why You can't get free upgrade? It should work without problems.

Thanks for the reply, how big of a difference would it make?
I only have one key and already used on my pc a long time ago, so I can't use it for my nephew pc.

I don't think it will work because the motherboard has UEFI.

1 big difference is with Windows Update. Pro gives you a lot more options than Home.

I have not seen a separate sold mobo having UEFI only, yet, most still have CSM, check for that option in the bios.

Thanks for the info. I'll do a little more research on the two version.

Don't waste your time on Home, if you can get Pro for free;):)

Here I agree with Enthousiast, I see no reason why You can not use the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. The key isn't the problem, UEFI isn't most probably the problem. So, what is the problem?
But if you do not really want a free upgrade, then of course you should buy a pro key.

If you refer to the Legacy BIOS support I think I've read somewhere that Intel will remove Legacy BIOS support from UEFI by 2020.

You know bud no question is a dumb question as far as i concerned and the people that do complain have to respect for the MDL fans or people on these forums the truly need some help, some people need to understand that not everyone here has as much knowledge as they do or they wouldn`t be asking questions in the first place . That being said if you would like to use Windows 10 home then you will be unable to upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate because if you try bud i believe you will be upgraded to windows 10 Pro. You can download windows 7 home for free and then use the DAZ tool to activate Windows 7 Home then upgrade to windows 10 home for free as i still believe this free upgrade deal is still available. If worse comes to worse Windows 10 home is not that expensive to buy.

If you decide to upgrade then no you don`t have to Reformat your hard drive but if you decide to do a fresh full install of Windows 10 Home then yes you will need to reformat drive.
