Maybe this reply needs to be moved to another areas of the forum. Just noticed your condolences to Rick Steele, EFA11, and whatever127. I had a similar experience with Woodman's Reverse Engineering Forum. One of the members who was a leader on the board, Kayaker, was ailing and I have been unable to contact him at an email address I had for him. and I can only presume the worst. Kayaker's motto was 'Teach, don't flame' and you could not meet a kinder, more able person on the Net. Reverse engineering holds a dark, evil connotation for some, but Kayaker and others, like Blabberer, proved that to be wrong.I have seldom met people with a higher integrity and openness on the Net. The site has now been closed permanently since Kayaker was running it along with Blabberer. It was funded by Woodman (Woodie), but I have no way of getting in touch with any of them. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be appreciated. Blabberer was an expert on the Windbg debugger as well as reverse engineering and may still be around on other boards.
so many good people disappear without a trace..the fact is;that we are not getting any younger..[ most if us can be discribed as boomers..] sometimes we hear about it, sometimes it leaves us guessing. the same is true for readroad, michaela joy,or coleoptere.. my own attirude in this is that of a fatalist.it does not necessarily mean that their life has ended. it could also be a choise they made. if i look at my own situation, i had a serious medical problem a few years ago. i could have dropped dead in an instant, and nobody would ever know. that is the crazy thing of meeting people online.. maybe we have a click.maybe not ships passing in the night, alas. [ there, but for fortune, as bob dylan said. just my two cents.]
Since the thread has turned into a nostalgia, let me remember some very helpful and intelligent people here. AveYo, djJones, Mr.X, Slave77, damn man what they say is true, treasure once lost seldom ever comes back. Now only the few people carrying the fame of MDL on their shoulders and this is why many projects never get off from the ground because if we had more coders, reverse engineers, packers, suppliers here, this place would be worth second to Redmon Microsoft.
Thanks for reply. Know what you mean. Have you heard of Fravia? He was one of the pioneers in reverse engineering and I recall connecting with him a few times for advise. He passed away and it's sad because you never really get to meet such people in person. Another pioneer was +Ork.
We have lost some valuable members for various reasons. The Internet is now old enough that people are actually passing away. That simply wasn't the case in the first years, where people online were mostly young. Other members shifted interests, or were drawn out by spammers and trolls. While a healthy community as such will recover from this, these members are lost forever. Another member mention: Paul Desmond, gamazet, Hotbird64
Fortunately some use their actual names and if they were to drop dead in an instant it would be on record. Plus, the lucky ones have options including better healthcare allowing for self-preservation if an accident were to occur. Essentially, it completely despoookifies or demystifies the entire situation, now doesn't it.
man i had no idea that slave77 had pass away.....i was wondering a while back how come i hadn't seen him here in a while....i love his work he wrote some really good scripts.....R.I.P brother you will be miss
One "dead" one, mentioned here, is not even really dead just a nick died. And @AveYo, @Mr.X nor @s1ave77 died as far as i know, they just left MDL.
Life happens buddy! MDL has been a fun place over the years and continues to be. Just because people don't post doesn't mean they aren't here or not still enjoying it! The MDL staff needs to be congratulated for being here and dealing efficiently with the large assortment of lunatics that pass thru. Not talking about you @gorski
but the greatest disappearing act is by Daz,,there was a discussion, where he was, long ago, [ and i would not want to stirr that up again.
I think I was away too long that I cannot remember if I encountered Redroad from here. But I am still familiar with Daz
Most of the time - but not of late, not so much, sadly... And no, not recognising myself, no worries... Not being a serious pessimist like yourself means we differ in understanding of "Human Nature", not that we are automatically lunatics in each other's eyes...
