So my sister-in-law's XP machine is failing on boot and I need to go in with Recovery Console mode to fix it, but the only japanese XP media I have is VLK and her machine is retail (and she can't find her CD). Am I going to run into any trouble?

As long as you can get to the recovery console, it doesnt matter what type of cd you use.

Thanks, I was able to get into Recovery Console no problem, but the damage turned out to be beyond anything I could do there (filesystem damage and a bunch of corrupted DLLs) and ended up needing to borrow the correct media to do a full reinstall anyhow.
