Got a new HP notebook a month ago from a friend in China with win 7 ultimate installed, it was activated earlier (as far as I remember) but now it says 3 days left to activate windows. When I am trying to put this key (which is shown in the diag report), it says invalid product key....the product key you entered appears to be a default product key and cannot be used for activation. Type a different windows 7 ultimate product key....please help.

Where did you get the key? It's a little odd the laptop has a retail version. Did you, or your buddy, do an Anytime Upgrade?

Which version and edition of Windows is indicated on the COA sticker on the case?

AlexAlba has a solution if you don't have a working key.

Exactly, which means it likely started out life with a retail version. But given how people dink with their computers and how he got it second hand, we don't really know for sure what all has been done so I asked the question.

it is brand new HP notebook, you are right it has no COA sticker. I think the vendor installed the win 7 ultimate with default/blank key. What should I do, use the windows loader....

Can do, but you may need to enable the ''Ignore existing SLIC'' option when installing the Loader.
