Rules of Thumb for installing Office 2013 and Office 2016

These two products seem to have a lot of nasty surprises when it comes to activation. For example,
after 1 hour onto Microsoft support chat, they sent me an (forgotten) activation license for a recently bought Office 2016.
Happy days I thought! But guess what, when applied the download for Office 2013 appear which was bought 2 years ago. I double checked the mail from MS, and it said activation key for Office 2016! Highly frustrating experience.

Anyway what are your best practice tips or rules of thumb for installing and activating Office 2013 and Office 2016?

any idea of how a so-called 2016 activation code actually leads you to a 2013 product?
