    Hi all

Just thought i would ask a little question.

    my set up

    Abit AW9d Max running a Pentium D 3.04ghz
    4 gig DDR2 ram

Been looking into buying a new chip, just thought i would ask to see if anybody is running this chip and would i see enough improvement in performance to justify the cost.

    Thinking of buying a Pentium Core 2 Extreme,either a QX6800 or QX6700.

Any thoughts on this. Woth the money or not ?

I found a core2duo is alot better than pen d's. I do not have quad so i assume they will be better.

I upgraded from d to core 2 duo's and it was alot better, so you take your chance.

The Pentium 4 cpu's, of which the Pentium 4 D is one of them, are terrible processors! They're really quite slow and the Core 2 range was a massive improvement over them. You will see a difference with a qx6800/qx6700 over the Pentium D, quite a large difference! However, I take it you will be buying a second hand processor? the qx6700/qx6800 are really quite old processors now, and they were really overpriced per performance when compared to the lower processors. Unless you get a very good deal on one its not worth it. How much are the costings you have?

I did a quick look up of the processors your motherboard supports:
CPU List FSB MB Rev. BIOS Ver. Result
    Core 2 Extreme QX9650 1333 All 一 一
    Core 2 Extreme QX6850 1333 All 一 一
    Core 2 Extreme QX6800 1066 All 16 OK
    Core 2 Extreme QX6700 1066 All 16 OK
    Core 2 Extreme X6800 1066 All 16 OK
    Core 2 Quad Q9550 1333 All 一 一
    Core 2 Quad Q9450 1333 All 一 一
    Core 2 Quad Q9400 1333 All 一 一

You will need to update the bios most likely if you haven't done so already. The Q9400 is a good processor, its actually later than the others in the list (the q9450, q9550 are better though) but there is a risk running second hand processors where the Q9400 would most likely be the only available new processor on that list.

The other alternative is to go for one that isn't on the support list, so I'm not sure whether it will work and not be recognised by name or not work at all! The processor I'm referring to is the Q9505.

you took the time to look up my board...Nice one.

On that table i just presumed the top two chips were not compatable with just having a line through "result" and the others had "OK".

My BIOS was updated a little while back when i did a SLIC2.1 BIOS flash. So i recon all is well on that front.

I am glad to hear i would notice an improvement.
When i started building this pc i thought i would start with a good base,i.e the Abit AW9D Max. then over time when funds became available i would add better bits, piece by piece.
I have just gone totally SATA drives,it is running 4gig DDR2 RAm (max = 8gig). My graphis ard will do so i recon the hip is the next thing to update.

Yes i will be buying a second hand chip. A little bit risky, maybe and there is a Core 2 Extreme QX6800 for £150 not sure what it will end up at,not holding my breath but i am watching it. There are quite a few of these types on ebay.

if i dont update mi chip i might get mi sen a new monitor,19" maybe even 20"

    Thanks for all the advice..

    Looking further...

On ebay there are many of the Q9505. These have a FSB of 1333.
My mobo only goes up to FSB 1066.

So i would take it the Q9505 is no good for my board. Chips on ebay for around £200.....

I will now have to look into how much a new cpu would cost.

1333 should be capable on your board via overclocking the board (the cpu won't be overclocked). Of course, you could always get the qx8600/qx6700 and overclock that...

You will find even a overclocked e5200 is far better than pen d's. So if you do not want to go all the way to quads at mo, a pen e5200 as long as your board accepts 45nm cpus.

Its true the e5200 is far better then the p4d's, but the q9400, qx6700, and q9505's are far better.

There are two different types of q9505's. There are the q9505, and q9505S, the S one is a 65W unit compared to the Q9505 which is a 95W unit. Not that it means much to you, but the S just adds another layer of potential incompatibility with your board.

The e5200 probably isn't worth the upgrade, the q9xxx would be definitely worth it. The FSB is easy to run higher, many 1066 boards can run at 1333 quite happily I believe...

    @ burfadel

You say a 1066 mobo could run 1333 quite easily.

I can not confess to truely understand the diferences between FSB's i.e 1066 and 1333.

Would i have to alter the BIOS setting to run a higher FSB or is this sort of thing done automaticly.

Just been looking at ebay..There is a E8400 (co) with a buy it now of £80, second hand like. this is compatable with my board, according to that chart..
