SkyLoad.net closed by U.S. Authorities as Megaupload

Streaming and download Sites that make a commercial piracy are more than ever in the crosshairs of justice. Before the arrest of the founders of MegaUpload noticed by U.S. authorities and New Zealand, Germany had led the way in June 2011 with a similar operation against Kino.to. The site didn’t hosted files, but was supporting different file hosting services that have sustained it, many have closed.

Among the survivors appeared SkyLoad.net, which has to be an operation similar to MegaUpload. The site was closed last week by German police, who arrested the owner aged 28. He is accused of personally uploaded more than 10,000 films, and have been promoting illegal content hosted by SkyLoad.net on portals like KinoX.to alternative.

More surprisingly, the authorities also arrested a young man of 25, who was the leader of the company that supplied the servers and the bandwidth used by SkyLoad. According to TorrentFreak, the man would be charged with knowingly provided to groups of servers that provide the first pirate copies of pirated works (“release groups”) and sites streaming films.

Both were indicted for counterfeiting offenses, and risk several years in prison. Following the operation in June, the adminitrateur of Kino.to has already been sentenced to three years in prison.

It should be noted that in all these cases, it is not the principle itself to offer a service to upload and download files which leads to convictions. This is the active participation of directors in acts of piracy, or encouragement, that trigger lawsuits.
