My laptop came with Windows 8.

When I tried Windows 7 on it, using the Intel USB 3.0 Driver 2.5.2.32 I get between 90 to 120 MB write speed from my HDD to the External USB 3.0 Western Digital Passport drive (calculated while transferring large video files)

But with Windows 8.1, the speed is around 20 MB/S only! that's like 20% of what it should be

I installed the latest Intel Chipset Drivers for my laptop v9.4.0.1027 from ASUS using the -overall -overide command

then Installed the IRST Driver v12.8.5.1000

All windows updates done, using a very light AV (Webroot Secure Anywhere AV)

What do you think is the issue here?

Perhaps trying the ASUS USB 3 driver for Windows 8.1 might cure the problem.

that wouldn't install says not compatible since Windows 8/8.1 is supposed to have them built in, only they suck badly

I have an ASUS P8Z77-V LE motherboard and ASUS' web site has a USB 3 driver for Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Are you doing the same test? When I back up my email folder (3.1GB & 9115 files) to USB 3.0 flash, it takes about six minutes. A single 3GB file takes about 2 1/2 minutes. (I remember backing up my email using USB 2.0 - 25 minutes, what a pain)

None of the Asus or 3rd party USB 3 controller drivers work on Win 8/8.1 for me and Asus tell you on the forums to not install them.

Leave it with MS drivers for now IMO.

No speed issues on a Asus Z87 Rog on Intel controller with a Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 64GB Memory stick.

Just a thought, maybe you need to update the firmware of your WD drive to make it compatible with Microsoft's USB 3.0 driver. Could you let us know what is the exact model of your WD drive?
    Thanks.

Check on the Manufacturers of your laptop if there is a new BIOS and if so, update the BIOS.

There quite a bit of changes between Windows 8 and 8.1 and a newer BIOS might works better and be more compatible.

And what's about the BIOS of your Laptop, which I was talking about above?!

If the BIOS isn't matching correctly to the driver, you'll have problems!

It is bro, I always have the latest drivers and BIOS

speaking of that, if the BIOS was the issue, then it wouldn't have worked like a charm under Windows 7 which I'm currently on.

I am not the first person to report this over at the ASUS ROG forums they have many similar threads about this, seems like a problem with Windows 8.1 only not Windows 8

If that work under Win 7 well didn't means it has also to work on Win 8/8.1 well!! It's possible if the BIOS didn't match the latest OS and it's drivers, it will still works well with the older OS and it's related drivers!

Just an example: on my ASRock Fatality MB with 990 chipset there wasn't any problem with Windows 8. Changed/updated to Windows 8.1 and I was not able to shut down the machine normally, it wasn't go off fully and also hibernating and sleep wasn't work! The BIOS were from August 2013! Updated the BIOS to the latest from 2/2014 and now all back to normal. And the same were happen to my Label Printer, was worked correctly on Windows 8 but Windows 8.1, after BIOS Update works correctly again!
