Thanks for that - I'll try the double install method. Setting the registry to upgraded didn't work for me...
What I have done in the past was to have Windows installed and activated on the hard drive. It must be activated. Then when you are installing your upgrade, when Windows asks you where or what partition you want to install the upgrade on, choose Advanced Options. Then delete the partition you had Windows installed on. You can also delete the system partition if you choose. Windows will create a new one. By this point Windows already checked to make sure it was installed and acitaved so deleting the two partitions will not effect your upgrade state. Then just continue with the installation. It worked for me.
@Michaela Joy - I tried the double install method and it didn't work either. On the first install MediaBootInstall was 0 (which is strange) and remained this way after the second install. The same error was received. I tried slmgr.vbs -rearm again but still I'm getting the C004F061 error @TrustMe - I don't have an activated windows - the partition originally had 10 Preview on (which was activated I suppose) but each install of 7 I've re-formatted it during the installation. (I only have 1 partition for Windows - I don't have a system reserved partition btw) I'll try to activate it with the toolkit and install again and see if that works or do you mean it has to be genuinely activated? I am using en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso with SHA1 = 36AE90DEFBAD9D9539E649B193AE573B77A71C83 which should (as far as I know) match the key I'm trying to use above.
Mine have always been genuinely activated. Don't try to use Microsoft Toolkit to activate Windows 7 it will not work. Use Windows Loader by Daz and only download it from this sight. I read someone on this sight downloaded it from somewhere else and got a virus. I don't have enough posts for a link but use this and fill in the blanks. h p://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/58464-Windows-Loader-Download?p=120996&viewfull=1#post120996 Windows 7 will automatically create a system partition when it is installed. It's only 100mb in size. This is the one that can be deleted when you are installing your upgrade.
I'll look into this but but according to this post hxxp://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/24902-Windows-Loader-Support-and-chat?p=1044575&viewfull=1#post1044575 it is not compatible with GPT disks. This is only true if there are no other partitions on your disk. I am currently using rEFInd as a loader and only have 1 partition assigned for Windows. I'll look into using Daz Loader (you are correct Microsoft Toolkit will not work as this no VL version and as I'm using a MacBook I don't have a BIOS to mod...) It is quite a lot of effort to change the loader and I'm not clear when you think it would be a good idea to change it back as my goal is to (in the end) have a genuine installation of 7 Ultimate using my Pro to Ultimate key with no workarounds. Is your suggestion: Replace rEFInd with Daz Loader to activate 7 Ultimate Install in-place upgrade, formatting Windows partition during install and don't activate Replace Daz Loader with back with rEFInd Check MediaBootInstall is 0 and rearm if necessary. Activate Sorry if I'm being thick but I'm not sure what procedure you are suggesting exactly....
It will work with Professional, not Ultimate, but Daz loader handles both. That should be a double install of Ultimate. You can not do an in place edition upgrade of Professional to Ultimate from the dvd, or by even by entering the anytime upgrade key in response to slui 3 after installing Professional. If Professional is running, start the online anytime upgrade process by typing anytime upgrade in the search box.
I think I can't use the loader as I have a MacBook with GPT. I don't have professional at all. I'm trying to do a clean install of Ultimate using the WAU key (details of the key are in first post). I used this key in the past on my old (broken) Lenovo to upgrade from Professional to Ultimate and as it is a retail key I was hoping it would work for a clean install of Ultimate on my MBP but neither the double install or MediaBootInstall method is working for me. If clean install using upgrade key isn't possible do you think I should download Professional and activate it with the toolkit, then upgrade it to Ultimate using my key?
I don't know much about Mac's, but I have read that apples Boot Camp manager makes the Windows disk look like mbr, so that Daz loader will work. I don't know what rEFInd would do, but I suppose you could run the loader app and see if it says whether you have an unsupported partition. Is there any real reason why you need Ultimate, i.e install Professional, activate with MTK and be done with it? If you wish to install Professional, do not start with the special vl iso version, since anytime upgrade will be disabled. Regular Professional can be changed from retail, to oem, or to vl just by changing the key. Edit: btw: I presume you know that you can remove the sources\ei.cfg file from the iso you already have, and then you will have the option to install any edition. No need for another download.
Thanks for the feedback - I didn't know about the sources/ei.cfg so that is good to know. I'll try the loader app - the worst is it will not work. The only reason I wanted to use Ultimate is because I bought the upgrade key and it bugs me slightly as it was really expensive (I needed the language packs at the time). If I could figure out how to activate Ultimate using this key then I would have a genuine version I could upgrade to Windows 10... If it isn't possible then it isn't possible...
If the loader does not complain about the partition table, but also does not work with default settings, report back. There may be some special options to tinker with.
The loader did work fine but I can't then use it as a method to clean install (without any hacks) using my upgrade key which is what I was trying to do. Ah well.
Did you try to activate with loader, then use slmgr /ipk to change key to the one you want ??? You may need to follow that with slmgr /ato Then again, the anytime upgrade key may be special and only usable on anytime upgrade ...
Got there in the end with a mix of the suggested steps Deleted ei.cfg and installed as 7 Pro and activated with loader (without internet connection). Reboot and add Ultimate using WAU key through "add features" Reboot and loader activation was lost but installation still Ultimate. Connect to internet and activated. Worked fine - no need even for phone activation. Installed all 229 updates and I have icon for Windows 10 ! Thanks very much for suggestions and not giving up on me - I now have legit installation using my WAU key - perfect I think this looks OK... There is nothing from the loader in the BIOS information and I'm activated. Yes, that seems the only way with anytime upgrade key, i.e. first install base edition then do the anytime upgrade. Your mgadiag report looks perfect. The file mismatches are because the wat update is not yet installed.
