Server 2016 build 1607 is LTSC build of server that is supported until 2027. Does anyone know how to do an in place update keeping settings and apps to server 2019 or 2022. Or anyway to convert it from LTSC (Long Term Service Channel) to SAC (Semi-Annual Channel)?

Sometimes with complicated non domain controller servers its easier to do and in place upgrade then reinstalling.

The old script file, Just another Tool, s1ave77's S-M-R-T JATD GUI did it. Took a little experimenting but eventually was able to keep data and apps. Brought server 2016, build 1607 to server 2022 build 20348.1249 with everything in place, Windows updates went through, sfc is clean, event logs minor minor fixes yet to do. There is a way out of 1607.

No need for special tools, just the usual registry name change is enough, like in any other windows.

I just read that in another forum.

Specifically, its just this reg key?

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
    • Find the value "EditionID"

Yep, change also ProductName, just to be sure. (IIRC not even a reboot is needed, so it's easy to check)
