After latest cumulative update, my Win10 LTSB has now started enabling the Windows Update Service, despite me having disabled it? I have always had it disabled, and it only gets enabled via the WUMT, via a script, then once updates are done, script then closes down the service again. Has worked like that for months, but no longer? Upon reboot (and not immediately) it sneakily re-enables itself again, thus popping up messages that I need updates? WTF!!??
Nice twist... Courtesy of Microsh*t Corporation You can block Windows Update installation attempts with this other service: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-10-update-disabler.72234/ I's just a service which runs in the background and terminates attempts by Windows Update to install anything. or try this other: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-update-blocker-v1-0.72325/
So, 'disabled' now means - 'disabled to me as a choice', but not to MS, as we'll just re-enable it anyway, regardless of what I want? There ain't a day goes by that I don't hate this monstrosity, but this day is the worst.
So you posted to just rant over here or get a solution? What is it you expected? This is the new Windows 10 era, embrace it or ditch it.
PowerRun lets me change services that are greyed out and cant have their start up type changed so it should work with windows update service. Please name the CU You can drag n drop stuff into the power run window.
Someone wil track the culprit down. We need to know via rants what fxckery ms is up to. It probably is the CU, easier to hide and impossible filter out.
can you give us a screengrab of the windows update service property window, see if the startup is greyed out please but dont use power run. It is highly likely this has found its way into other os too.
I can select any type of startup I want, including 'disabled', but at next system start, it will eventually change itself to 'manual' (running), normally within a period of 10 mins after start, but it varies.
I thought they would have greyed it out. So they are using a sneaky trick, fxxkery indeed. No wonder people get pissed off. Cue more rants. Forewarned is forearmed. You might have to block windows update in the firewall then add and delete the rule to suit.
Yup, which begs the question. What is the point in having the option 'disabled' there at all now? It will be disabled, yes, but only if you never plan to shut down or reboot, as I've tested this for 2 days now, and it seems to not 'magically' start if one does not do so - yet!
Crafty, shutdown your pc which most do everyday and it restarts. Try blocking it in the firewall, until the screw with that option too. Now the NSA can add anything they want to your pc and there is sweet fa you will be able to do about it. George Orwell must be wetting himself
@scaramonga If I was in this situation I would use windows update blocker to stop the update service https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-update-blocker-v1-0.72325/ then I would go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and delete both DataStore.edb and DataStore.jfm files then using windows update blocker restart the update service and check for updates This will delete your update history if nothing else you will have a clearer picture of what update is causing the problem good luck
