Nope, meant the whole thread, this new trick (StartIsBack) is an evolution of the one before (Ex7forW8). Thats why i pointed to this post in it. So no mistake from my side.... regards
i am a little confused now. is "StartIsBack" new name of previous "Windows 7 Explorer for Windows 8"? or are both separate things and available for download?
StartIsBack is a new project, which does bring the start menu back but doesn't require Windows 7 files. Ex7forW8 is free while StartIsBack won't. I don't want to create thread here unless i'll have beta version which is more functional.
separate things. He found a way to enable the skipped functions in W8, so we no longer need the W7 explorer. He enables the native W8 start menu. You know, the one that microsoft 'removed' at the last minute, turns out they didn't really remove it, just disabled it.
This makes me wonder how much of those 3.3 GBytes from DVD's installation media is similar junk/disabled/no longer used code ?
Thousands of lines are problably now not used or/and havent been changed in decades. This happens in all OSs; Linux, OS X, Windows, etc........Its impossible to rewrite everything without break something.
just a few years ago a buffer exploit patch was released for the windows kernel, the exploit was present in all versions of windows back to 3.1 (yet only xp and beyond gets a patch). I'd say quite a bit of bloat.
thanks for the clarification. thats really nice. if its true, startisback will be the first software doing this.
Start Menu frames are still in aero.msstyle.... And orb maybe still in explorer.exe... not checked....
you can still find classic start menu references in group policy editor in windows 7. even many system files like shell32.dll.mui still contain strings related to classic start menu but that doesnt mean its code is till present in windows 7. microsoft completely removed it from windows 7. same case with windows 8.
there's nothing new, sorry i do not understand your point... Did not checked, at the beginning the plan was to build themes for Windows 8, but i do not like it neither use or switch on the test Pc with RTM on it... Creating themes with no Aero, you loose 3/4 of fantasy and creativity, using solid colors a Theme builder has so small idaes to make a good readability theme for everyday use.... (Just my opinion...)
Given that Classic Shell has been available, for free, all along, I submit that the start menu was never really gone.
