If it has a Phoenix BIOS then NO. If it has an AMI or Award Bios then yes if he uses the proper flash utility (AMI: Afudos or Afuwin, AWARD: Awdflash or Award WinFlash)to make the back-up.
Try changing the Operating System in the e-support page. Sometimes there is no bios update for Vista but there is one for Windows 7. They might not have a selection for Windows 7 either for older lappys too. This was true for my Vaio-Z, they made bios updates for issues with Windows 7 like the virtualisation unlock and Bit-locker isssues with Windows 7 but not Vista. It might also have an Insyde bios too, and no I don't know the parameters of messing with them.
