Good morning, I'm looking to find recovery cds or dvds for this machine. It is Sony Vaio VGC-LM1E with windows vista home premium
Does anyone have the originals or copies to upload? Or can some other similar recovery work? I don't know that's why I'm asking. I want to restore this particular machine to its factory settings as I bought it then.

I tried with the recovery disk that I found on archive.org, it is the same model as mine, but it still shows this message even though I burned it on 3 4.7gb dvd licenses
cannot use this recovery disc for the computer confirm the model type

Which message exactly? You mean the message ‘it cannot use the disc for your model type’?

You mean to say that you did upgrade the bios and are now blocked from recovering because of that?

I didn't upgrade it because it won't let me, it stayed as it is.

no idea about the specific model but while once recovery disks were made by proprietary utilities, nowadays are mostly just wim images ready to be applied using dism.

Usually they are just buried in NTFS partitions with a non standard ID.

Just change the ID from whatever it is to 07 (which is NTFS) (or 0B /0C which is fat32 in the unlikely case the recovery partition is formatted as fat32).

You can use the linux fdisk or the ptedit.exe utility that came with the good old partition magic (and that still works perfectly) to change the partition ID.

Then just apply the wim and add the deployed OS to the bootloader.

Does DISM work with Windows Vista?

It's installable but is not a stock feature in vista, but there is imagex for applying and capturing images.
There's also the open source wimlib that works even on Xp, Linux and the fruit thing.

Thank you for the screen shots :).

Good luck with this. The odds may be good, but that one percent probability can still be a bad outcome.

Hopefully your last reply will be a success story :)

Edit: In the screenshots I can see the recovery program loading before windows starts (because of course it does). But do you start it from within windows 7 (meaning a reboot will follow) or right after boot? If you tried only one: could it be that the other method does work? Just shooting in the dark here, thinking of possibilities…
