Silly question but this has solved some "ghost file" or "ghost icon" issues I've had before. Have you tried rebooting?

i tried ccleaner....did nada... and yes i use idm for my download manager....but where link points there is no link. like i said i can add it and it will work ...but i dont need a (2) link....i would rather delete them and let them fall in under recent used programs..

man what a pain in the butt. i fixed it was a hex decimal issue

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage

    ProgramsCacheTBP
    ProgramsCacheSMP
    ProgramsCache

simply edited those valves....all is working again..including recent programs as well as the ability to pin and unpin to start menu.......
