I am still not able to update to windows 10. I fixed every single error on my HP ENVY dv7 lsptop from 2012 with the orginal os instilation with 8.1 upgrade installed. I still for the life of me can't upgrade to widows 10. do you all thing the only way I'll be able to finally get windows 10 on it is to reinstall windows 8 ( I have a legal copy of 8 not 8.1 that I bought) then upgrade to 10 if it will let me?

What errors do you get when trying to update?
    How do you update?

All i get is it failed for error then goes back to desktop I dont have a usb stick or any blank dvd's. I have 8.1 pro what ever version it upgraded to from win 8 on my hp laptop it was oem 8 when I first got it.

I ran this and sfcscan/now and this to fix my errors: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    They all got fixed.

Did you try to upgrade via one of the ISO's from MS or trying through windows update? If you haven't tried ISO install, might give it a go.

@ robmadden1, you still need to upgrade to windows 8.1 first 8.0 does not qualify for free upgrade same as windows 7 needs to be sp1.

So, what do you use to mount the ISO's?

Where did you get the ISO's?

I would get yourself a 4gb usb stick for the Install process, works every time for me.

On your next try, before doing, in taskbar, right click, task Manager, in task manager on tabs at top, select startup, disable every item in there, right click select disable, also uninstall any Anti Virus software you have on computer, after install Win 10, after upgrade/Clean Install, skip keys when asked, do it later, remember to go back to task manager and enable what is their, good luck:D

I hate to be the one to tell you, But Norton Anti-Virus is crapware, the worst of the worst, windows defender is fine, works well, and is free:D

I refuse to use defender. Its junk to me. I have had no issues what o ever with Norton and mine is a version tht works with 10. I have 10 on my HP split X and it works fine. I have never had really any issues with 10 plus deffender is not an antivirus. Norton can catch way more than defender ever will be able too.

No I just want windows 10 on this Laptop my main machine. I dont want to be stuck with windows 8.1. I like 10. I am not sure if I try an old insider build if it will let me get it installed then upgrade to the latest build since I am part of the insider program.

Then perhaps it is time for you to put your hands on an ISO image of 8.1, to be kept on your HDD (unless you are also short on internet bandwidth, too.) This would help in the (unlikely and unwelcome) case where you really need to go the long route and reinstall 8 then upgrade to 8.1 then upgrade from there to 10.

Otherwise, I would check in Windows event viewer that there are no problem left unresolved there; and yes you probably should try to upgrade after uninstalling Norton.
