i just upgraded my windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 pro.

now, whenever i am inserting any flash drive and hard drive, i am getting a safe to remove hardware notification BUT the device name in the notification is greyed out and i cannot eject the device. Basically nothing happens when i click the device name to eject it...

    please help!!! see the attachment...

Try to delete usb device in device manager and restart in safe mode.
Perhaps your antivirus is checking it, disable antivirus and try to disconnect the drive again.

Well for my side, I never use an upgrade installation for Windows, it's always a challenge :D, better is doing a fresh installation after deleting all partitions. Do a backup of your personal files before. You can also run sfc /scannnow before doing a new installation, just to verify ;).
