the xdebug.trace_output_dir away from /tmp it stops the tracing from starting

    I am running a Ubuntu 13.04 server and have installed xdebug on it but when i go in the php.ini file and try to change the xdebug.trace_output_dir away from /tmp it stops the tracing from starting,
    how can I get the trace to output to a different file location?
