Does anyone know how to put a toolbar onto the desktop in 7? Apparently this function has been officially removed, but since it still worked in Vista (and every other version of Windows) i think there has to be some registry trick or something to re-enable this? Any ideas what to try?
Pretty sure it was replaced with the ability to pin things to the taskbar. I use ObjectDock... even though there are some issues and it hasn't been updated in forever.
If they really did it for that reason then this was an awefully stupid move because the ability to pin objects to the taskbar is just no replacement for the toolbar. Not even remotely. For a better understanding of what im really after: If you are on any Windows other than 7, click START and drag the 'Computer' entry to the top-border of the desktop and release the mousebutton. There you go, a nice realtime-toolbar which lists all partitions that are presently online. If you unmount one of the partitions it will no longer be shown, and if you remount a partition it will be added again. (Like i said, realtime, which is particularly important if you use TrueCrypt to frequently mount and unmount your encrypted partitions.) The problem is that my entire desktop setup depends on this toolbar to be there, and alternatives like RocketDock dont work for me because they just dont work the same. (For example; no screen-space reserving, hence no pushing down of the desktop icons.) So unless i can find a way to re-enable the toolbar function i simply cannot make 7 my main OS. And i would hate to be damned to using Vista for all eternity, so one way or another i need that darn function back...
All you have to do is right-click on your taskbar at the bottom of the screen and go to toolbars and put a check mark next to desktop. It will place a real-time desktop option that you click on and shows all your desktop files. It's really simple, works great, and positions itself down by the clock and other programs.
1). Right Click on the Taskbar -> UNcheck "Lock the taskbar" 2). Mouse over the top edge of the Taskbar, click and drag it up 3). Rlight Click on the Taskbar -> Toolbars -> "New Toolbar..." 4). Select the folder of your choice, like Computer 5). Left Click on the Gripper edge and move it where you would like your toolbar to be 6). Right Click on the Title -> View -> Large Icons (Repeat to hide/show Title and Text) 7). Right Click on the Taskbar -> check "Lock the taskbar"
