The best tool for maintenance is your brain.
Don't install stuff you aren't going to use.

As far as looks, I don't know. I typically just black desktop and keep it organized.

I have to go with Murphy's recommendations.
I test the progs in VM and assess them first.

I try to use portable apps where possible. Waterfox, Opera, Firefox come in portable versions. I have Waterfox on my data drive and can run it from any drive I boot into and have the same config.
Every time you install prog. there are reg entries made. Even after uninstalls they remain in the registry, some were impossible to delete. Acronis comes to mind.

I've found that WinSCP, CCLeaner, uTorrent, Firefox, HexEdit, Paragon HDM, IDM, 7Zip are all available in the form of standalone Portable executables. Some may write temp files, but easy to clean out, just delete the folder. Helps to keep it clean.

Not a suggestion just my preference. To each his own.

yep all are portable, and are part of a toolkit I put together to build/work on systems for other people. My personal stuff I just install them full since space isnt an issue and the majority are used almost daily.

 Exactly what I have. I use the WinPen Pack and added some stuff I like to use. Another one that I really like is Hiren's Boot DVD 15.2 Restored Edition, which you most likely have as well. :D

I prefer winrar to 7zip (just a preference). And K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, which includes Media Player Classic for playing movies and music. Gvim is my editor of choice. CCleaner of course. Imgburn. TCC LE (command shell).
