There's a fair bit written about registry edits that allow install DVDs to handle "unofficial" upgrade paths between Windows versions.

Is there an unofficial way to allow the Windows installer to handle upgrades between client versions (Win 7/8) and server versions (2008R2/2012)?

In theory it should be possible - the client and server versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8 (desktop UI) are almost identical as regards application software, settings, UI customisation and most drivers. Does anyone know if there is a "how to" thread or tool to do this, or whether it's a mod/regedit to the existing OS, or to the installer DVD, that needed?

My advice, don't even try. Its a server. It should be as stable as possible. Do a fresh install. One version of server doesn't even have a gui, so the files don't seem that identical to me.
