I agree with you. Then again, some people think that 7-zip is much better, as it can compress files into a much smaller size than WinRAR can. What is your opinions, guys?
7Zip is Open-Source WinRAR is Shareware and have main 7z features LZMA2 is best than RAR Compression, almost always has a higher performance in low time .
It depends on what you're doing, I have seen winrar reach a better ratio compared to 7zip, even when playing with the settings to optimize it. That were rare cases though, I think 90% of the time 7z is indeed better. But what I really miss in 7z is the ability to create archives with recovery archive, if 7z had + a better gui (winrar's gui is way better) I'd switch to 7z without hesitation.
i have not used winrar for ages...... when i did it was just shareware yelling for its money...... i used arj in the good old dos days. i used zipcentral for a while.. now i use 7zip, which is perfectly adequate.. some thoughts; with my present bandwith and storage space, compressing files is a waste of time. decompressing files constitutes a slight security risk, the person who packed it may well have added extra files containing malware.. if he places unpacked file online, this risk would be absent.. with the possible exeption of installers/cab-files compression/decompression is now absolete, in my book..
I use both WinRAR and 7-zip, not so much for making|extracting normal .rar or .zip files, but for their SFX installer purposes. I make silent installation packages for unattended installation from my Win7.iso, and find both applications very useful for my purposes.
