So My buddy decided to upgrade and gave me his old i5-2500k for free! So my question is should I try and find a good old 1155 motherboard and use this i5 or does it make financial sense just to go buy a whole new CPU and mobo considering how old it is? Any advice is greatly appreciated this is my first big upgrade.

    Hi,
considering the fact that a second hand 1155 MB will be very cheap, you can buy it anyway. i5-2500k is a decent performer

Hmmm found this ebay.com/itm/ASRock-Z77-Extreme4-LGA-1155-Intel-90-MXGKX0-A0UAYZ-Motherboard/172752370397) for only $150 it looks nice. Do you think it could keep up with today's games?

Hi, what is your budget range for your PC? The i5 2500K isn't bad. What kind of GPU are you looking at btw? Also are you going to use it for gaming? Any CPU intensive engineering/scientific programs like COMSOL Multiphysics or just basic stuff?

If the first 2 apply and if you want to future proof for the next 5, 6, 7 years I'd suggest getting an upgrade otherwise for right now they're not bad.

theres an article from Eurogamer that I found informative on that very chip and if you should upgrade or not. Thanks -jteg
