This is just a point of information. I ran into this problem trying to upgrade my Windows 10 Professional Operating System from 1909-863 to 2004 19041.xxx.
I kept receiving a error message that you can't upgrade from a USB Device. Turns out it has nothing to do with a USB device it deals with an SSD device that your trying to upgrade to.
The solution to this problem is to make a small change to a Regedit file.
Change this value in Regedit HK_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control From "1" to "0"
Now you will be able to upgrade your Windows 10 Operating System SSD to 2004 19041.xxx
    Hope this helps.

Never needed to modify anything to be able to upgrade from build to newer build.
