Hi My wife's laptop came with a free Win7 Upgrade. I've got a Dell machine which is 18 months old so won't have SLIC 2.1 on the BIOS. Since the wife's will have SLIC 2.1 as it's only a month old, can I use the generic Dell keys on this site to install Win7 on her machine, and then use her upgrade key to install it on mine so that I won't have to flash my BIOS? What kind of key is the Dell Upgrade - will it be tied to SLIC 2.1 or just an ordinary key? cheers
When Vista came out I used my free key on another pc... So if things don't change it should work! (I did a fresh install as well!) Never even did an upgrade install!
For what it's worth, the Dell "upgrade" discs appear to be the same as the normal (OEM) discs -- there's no Dell branding, wallpapers, etc. And the key appears to be a a normal OEM key. Best I can tell they've simply made the disc itself a Dell disc via the way it's physically labelled. The OEM key will get tied to the one machine on which it's activated and shouldn't be transferable, but that's it. The OS also assumably needs to be installed as an OEM rather than retail version to take the OEM key.
