Vista SP1 prerequisites

    I believe I need to install some patches before I can install sp1.

    can someone tell me what are these patches?

    If you download the stand alone package the prerequisites are already in it.

    now does the standalone format the harddrive or just overwrite the current data?

    The standalone upgrade your current vanilla Vista, no formatting is done. Can take lotsa hours though.

    I installed SP1 on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine and it took exactly one hour (22:14 - 23:14) which maybe is a coincidence but at a friend of mine it also took just an hour...so it's not too long...

    Usually no prepatches are needed. Just plain Vista and SP1. What makes you think you need these patches anyway?

    who are you asking? i'm just trying to make sure that when i need it i'll know what the deal is.

    The pre-patches only apply if you are using Windows Update.
    This was the case for the pre-release versions, and the last refresh candidate.
    The stand-alone SP1 has everything included.
    Depending on the speed of your machine, expect anywhere from 45 min - 2 hours install time.
