Hi, I will start from the very beginning. There is a huge issue with Windows Update for fresh installation this days. Microsoft did post update for Windows 7 SP1 - KB3102810 and for Windows 8.1 - KB3102812. I don't know is there update for Vista SP2 which is also affected. I personally experienced this issue on clean Vista and 7 installation both x64 architecture. Symptoms are after first Internet connection Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256 is downloaded then memory usage goes to about 900MB and CPU to 100% by svchost.exe making system unusable. Stopping wuauserv makes CPU usage drop instantly. Windows Update can't find any updates. There's no error code. Just searching and draining resources. Installing provided updates makes WU usable again but there is no update for Vista. Is there any solution?
I have the same problem. Tried both x64 and x86 Vista sp2 installations. Checksur tool makes no difference.
OK, got it working. I used wsus offline to d/l the updates. Then integrated them into install.wim. Vlite or Vista Update Integrator can be used for that. New wuagent was not integrated. I skipped ie8 and integrated ie9 (to extract IE9-Vista.CAB from the IE9-WindowsVista-x86-enu.exe that wsus downloads IE9-WindowsVista-x86-enu.exe /x:"c:\folder" ) It takes longer to install as the updates are pending, so an additional 10 mins or so as Vista is "completing installation". When windows update is run, it asks to d/l new wuagent, closes - then re opens. Seems necessary to close windows update and reboot. Working fine now.
I need to refresh a computer at the office with Vista Ultimate SP2 x64, do windows update still has the mentioned issue??
Similar problem for me with a fresh install of Win7 SP1. What I found was by default Win7 was setting sleep mode to 20min. and what I thought was going from black screen back to desktop being the monitor power saver, was actually sleep mode, so every time I brought the machine monitor back it was coming out of sleep. After turning sleep mode to never I eventually got to the update site but it took hours. For another reason I had to reinstall again but this time I downloaded AutoPatcher, ran its downloader and saved the file to my D drive. Once the Win7 was reinstalled and a few drivers were added I ran autopatcher again and this time selected install and I was at least caught up closer to date than SP1. I saved the Autopatcher file as well, just in case I screw up again.
by then nobody should be using Vista. Mozilla will officially drop XP & Vista support with Firefox 53, scheduled sometime in the spring of 2017.
So I had a very outdated Vista SP2 image, and installed the following 7 updates in the following order, and the search for updates found 191 updates after about an hour, hour and a half. I'll try it out on a clean install sometime soon. pastebin(dot)com/EGX89Uh9
The KB3204723 win32k.sys fix only worked for about 3 months and then Microsoft issued a newer win32k.sys update in March 14, 2017 so the problem came back again at that time and required the KB4012497 win32k.sys update to temporarily speed up WU searches until April 11 (ah the EOL date for Vista) and Microsoft released the very last win32k.sys update for Vista on April 11 - KB4015195.
