What am I missing if I don't update to 8.1?

I just bought my w!fe an Acer Touch V5 laptop that comes preinstalled with Windows 8.

I upgraded it to Windows 8.1 via the store then immediately noticed that my boot up takes an additional 2 mins, like when I restart, I just see a black blank screen for 2 mins then the boot process starts.

Did a little bit of research and it seems that the culprit were the Bluetooth Drivers so I updated all the drivers from the Acer website and the boot was fine then.

But my main question is, since I use StartIsBack which does give me a real start menu and I never see metro, what am I missing by not updating to 8.1 let's say if I get another laptop in the near future?

The way I see it is the upgrade is more of a hassle than a convenience and gives me personally nothing exciting other than driver headaches.

If I stay on Windows 8, can I continue to receive security updates or is it a mandatory upgrade to go to Windows 8.1 to be able to get the latest security updates?

Windows 8 only comes with PowerShell 3.0. Only way to get PowerShell 4.0 is to upgrade to 8.1, it can't be installed on 8.

As of now, windows 8 will receive all security updates till Oct 17/18, 2015 (that it, till 2 years after GA of 8.1).
So, 8 will be supported till Oct 2015 and in fact 8 receives updates every month.
8 of course is not being offered IE 11 and perhaps even future IEs. Plus, 8 does not have that half baked start button of 8.1, the funky start screen of 8.1, and some apps notably facebook.
I use 8 and 8.1 interchangeably and find them equally fine.

Its always better to INSTALL 8.1 (yes, clean install, not upgrade) because 8.1 solves a bunch of windows 8 errors, plus it saves u battery. You should get an original or non modified ISO of the same version of Windows 8.1 an do a clean install with the Win 8 key found within the BIOS. THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY A NEW ONE. Win 8 key activates win 8.1 (same version) you should check it out. It is recommended
