my OS is W8 x64, I recently noticed this: Nalpeiron Licensing Service nlssrv32.exe running silently in the background, some googling told me it's related to software protection... is this right and would it be advisable to kill it ?
    thx

I have it in my services but the file isn't even there. I assume it's some cracked program I have that puts it there but no longer needs it because... it's cracked.

Is there any way actually to find out which software uses (or might use) this service? I understand the idea that one can just try out what happens if.. But is there any way else?

It's legit, it gets installed automatically with some PDF program as I can recall

If I recall correctly, there was a thread about NitroProPDF and the nalpeiron service and the fact that the service wrote a few bytes to physical sector 63 of your drive. I think there was something about using a hex editor like HxD to clean up the marker(tag) that nalpeiron left if you were going to uninstall the service and then later decided to install it again.
