Virtualization commonly refers to taking a single powerful computer and using software to run multiple instances of it's own or a different operating system and applications, such that each instance operates and as treated like an individual computer, with its own allocated processor, memory, and storage. Because the virtualization takes place via software itself, it allows for centralized management of all virtual machines and the easy backup of and restoration of data from them.
