Hi friends, it seems like this section of MDL is sleepy. Lets talk about what distro we use. I have played with linux for about 8 years. Started with Corel and move to Mandrake(long before mandriva),then Suse, tried slackware and debian but couldnt install them, I think it was debian 2.2. Time passed and I dabbled more. Gave Ubuntu a try and Open Suse, fedora and mandriva, then tried debian again. Now for over a year I am a happy debian user. I think I have found a home with it but I am willing to explore other distros. I have heard good things about gentoo, arch, and others. I like debian because of its long history of good work and great package managment with huge repsitories. This plus the freedom, sort of an erector set for linux approach. What distro do you use and why?
We use CentOS. We run DirectAdmin, apache, php, perl, exim, mysql, all the standard stuff. We never have any problems. But its really a matter of what you are used to, like, or makes sense to you. I do not really think any are really that much better than another.
CentOS is the Sh!t for servers..It does a wonderful job, and runs forever.. I think this is not for a workstation or home machine though..I think an Ubuntu variant is the easiest. I like the Sabayon distro..It has a learning curve (it is Gentoo), but it is nice and smooth. The package manager leaves a bit to be desired, but the distro is solid...I have used it quite a bit. I am definitely a distro hopper..I like most of them. I LUV PCLOS..
Clarkconnect (community edition) on my (home) server, Monowall on my router, Kubuntu on my desktop, and a little bit of Backtrack for fun, all run flawless.
I usually ran Slackware or FreeBSD, but now i'm running Arch Linux, it's a beast, very easy to configure and use...
They even sent me a free CD how could I NOT install. See I am too lazy to download not to mention custom compile distro. In the past I recompiled FreeBSD but it took too long and I saw the light...
You mean.....Free as in Beer....... You should support the progression of your distro of choice, or the Linux movement in general. With donations I mean The OS is not free......
I have literaly tried them all, I think I liked Mandrake the best back in the day the new Mandriva is only good if you have the Power Pack wich is a paid for version... Not sure wich one is my current favorite im still looking for one that will have working sound on my laptop I can get everything else working perfectly but when it comes to sound, nothing. From what I have read there is a bug in the current kernal version with my specific sound hardware and Alsa or something Other then the lack of sound its great DSL is great and Teenpup linux is great for older hardware
Nice to see some Linux users here. I prefer Debian on the web-server due to its stability and reliability. My router runs pfSense (FreeBSD based) and my AP runs DD-WRT which is Linux based. I use Kubuntu on the Desktop. For older PCs Ubuntu(lite) with LXDE works well for me even with as little as 256MB of ram.
