I received a Alienware M17x and I don't know what version it is. I need to purchase a new battery and power cord. I would also like to make some upgrades if possible. How can I find out which version of this laptop I have? It's not listed on the bottom.

It's impossible to tell you because there have been a million or more different pc-s released under the Alienware M17x name.
Every Dell has its own Service Tag, which is a 7-digit string of numbers and letters, and it is always written somewhere. For example, at the bottom or elsewhere, but also in the BIOS.
Each battery also has its brand and/or product designation on it. It can help you much more. Find it and go to Dell support site.
But it can be assumed that this pc dates from around 2009-2010, because that's when such a processor came into use. (CPU First Seen on Charts: Q1 2009)

Launch msinfo32, you should see the exact model

    or

enter the bios (F2 usually) and get the info there

    arlawson83:

What is the exact 7-character "service tag" number on that Dell Alienware M17x series laptop?

Because Dell sometimes removes portions of its support site when a computer is more than 10 years old, the support site for your laptop may not provide all the pertinent information that we need, but we will not know that for sure until we check the support site for yours.

If you going to use it for gaming that machine is very old is good to play older games that were design for that era your CPU cannot be upgraded

I'm not using it for that. It was given to me so I'm just using it until I can afford a new laptop. If I play any games they will be retro games (NES era to Gamecube era). Any new games will be played on consoles once I finally buy a PS5.
