I'm currently using Internet Explorer 9.0.275 or MyPal 29.3.0 while testing Windows Vista and need to load a webpage for some reason. Internet Explorer no longer supports most webpages, and MyPal stopped being updated several months ago, so I'm looking for a better alternative while testing Windows Vista. Does anyone here have some good recommendations?
To my knowledge, the latest versions of Firefox are 98.0.1 and 91.5.0 ESR. Where do you obtain the Vista extended kernel from, and how do you make use of it so Firefox can be installed in Vista? Update: Disregard the above request. I have been reading about and watching videos on it, and it is way too complicated for me to do.
Do you have access to or a copy of that batch script? What version of Firefox are you running in Windows Vista 64-bit?
I think you need to contact win32 on MSFN (the developer of the Extended Kernel). I recently upgraded to version 98 of Firefox.
That thread is 124 pages long, and I can't read anything because it's covered with banners and pop-ups. I'll just stick with what I'm currently using.
ExtremeGrief: I already guessed the vistaexkernelsetup.cmd file needs to be deployed in my Windows Vista SP2 64-bit test machine. What occurs when I deploy that command file, and how will it allow me to use Mozilla Firefox 98? I'm not trying to be naggy or picky, but I want to know what's going to happen so I don't trash everything.
Win32 has ported some APIs from Windows 7 to Windows Vista. Therefore you can run applications that were meant to run on Windows 7 and above on Vista. It could be a good idea to do a restore point before you install extended kernel though. With your habit of frequent clean installs it will be just fine. If you don't want to bother with this and you just want a browser working for a while during your tests on your test machine you can try one of the browsers mentioned above. Personally I found the New Moon to work the best on vista. Alternatively you could try out the extended kernel on the next patch Tuesday before the next clean install. That way you have nothing to loose
xrononautis: Thanks for your reply. I did a clean install 2 days ago and added the SHA-256 update you suggested which allowed me to install .NET Framework 4.6.2. It also allowed me to install 3 apps that I could not install before. What will happen with my current Windows Vista SP2 64-bit setup if I deploy the Vista extended kernel command file? If it is going to trash it or cause major problems, it is not worth using it for the sole purpose of installing Firefox 98.
After installing it and rebooting, you need to get portable Firefox 98 and you may need to change the Windows NT Version dependency with CFF Explorer.
I decided to jump the gun. I created a system restore point, then I deployed the extended kernel file, then I rebooted. I attempted to install Firefox 98, but it displayed a message saying Windows 7 or newer is required. I attempted to update a couple of other apps, but I ran into the same roadblock. I ran system restore to revert back to a condition before I deployed the extended kernel file. I was greeted with a mess - missing files, missing drivers, etc.. I will be doing another clean install of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit sooner than expected.
