I have been given a dud IBM PC (Hard Drive dead).
I have found the xp key that IBM uses on the web, & I have the key on the xp licence stuck to the machine.
Will xp Retail, VL or OEM work with either of these keys?
If not can I modify one of them to work.

OEM works with that key but OEM:SLP is to prefer.

Just download an oemxp cd and install.. or make it oem:slp first which is better.

Which one, the one on the Microsoft/IBM coa sticker or the one they actually use on their PCs, they're different.

They should be different, as one is OEM:COA and one is OEM:SLP key.... use the SLP one with the proper oembios set...

    Just like tito said.

Find which string your bios has and find it in the oembios archive and use the oem:slp key.
First you need to make it a oemcd (if its not already).
