Who owns this PC? Yes, that is a good question, especially when you meet this screen during setup. No where is there a mention of how to create a local account? You have to reluctantly press the "I own it" link, even though it clearly says, "We'll set it up as yours using a Microsoft account." Then you have to press the tiny "Skip this step" on the next screen, forcefully trying to suck you into Microsoft's Cloud of happiness, before you can create a local account! BAD BILL !!!
Indeed, was OP in hibernation ?? This thing had huge threads everywhere in Windows 8.1 release.. Including in MS official Feedback forums while eve 8.1 was i Public Beta !! It safe to say that by now, most knows to find that option of Skip MS Cloud stuff
At least it lets you skip this step. I recall a while back when I had to intentionally disconnect from the Internet just to use a local account.
Technically, it was Ballmer who was around when this whole thing took off. But yeah, I get what you're saying.
That wasn't needed, it could always be skipped. In 8.0 it was simple, in 8.1 you had to select "create new account" and than "local account" in 10 it hasn't really changed since 10240.
Disconnecting from the Internet was necessary for Windows 8.1 Preview, unless you were willing to put a fake email address when "signing up" for a Microsoft account. At least that's from what I can recall.
I always skip MS account so I can put my real name if for user account. Then naturally I use MS account after first logon.
My pcs are all joined to a domain, so I always start by answering that the organization owns it. You can't actually join a domain at that point, however, so you get walked through creating a local account. Of course, it's completely optional joining the domain or entering Microsoft Account info after setup is done. So it seems the easiest way to own your machine is to pretend you don't.
