Why does Win7 say I entered a default key?

I had a list of Windows 7 keys so I tried to activate (for educational purposes only) and see if they are valid. So during a clean install I entered a key and then Windows loaded. I went into Computer Properties and clicked Activate Windows Now. The strange part is that the Enter Product key Window shows up. Normally it would start to activate since I entered it during install, correct? So I typed in the same key as I did during install. Now I get a message that this is a default key and to try again. What does this mean?

Yeah, I guess I picked one that was the actual default key. Now that explains it. :D
