I am using the smb service to connect to my nas which is a synology ds920+. I am using two laptops to access the nas folders by using windows explorer and both laptops have windows 10. The problem is that when I open windows explorer to browse folders on the nas then the spinning circle shows next to the mouse pointer for an instant and then it goes away, it comes back after a few seconds and it shows for an instant and then it goes away and so on. I bought the nas on march 2021. Back then I was using ext4 volume and two wd red nas disks. The issue never happened while I was on ext4. In the beginning of November I removed one wd red 4tb and I put the first ironwolf 4tb and in mid November I removed the other wd red 4tb and I put the second ironwolf 4tb. I stayed on ext4 for one more week and then I did hyperbackup backup for mydata, unmapped z: from the first laptop, removed ext4 volume, created btrfs volume, restored mydata and mapped z: and then I opened z: and the spinning circle next to the mouse pointer suddenly started coming and going every few seconds and it never stopped and the issue continued when I closed windows explorer and I was on the desktop so I restarted the laptop and then the problem went away. The problem happened again once in December so I restarted the laptop and then the problem went away. Yesterday I opened a folder in movies on the first laptop. The spinning circle next to the mouse pointer came and went every few seconds for 5 times then it stopped. I played a 20min episode in vlc player and then I closed vlc player and I went back to that folder and the issue happened again and it also happened when I opened a folder on the laptop hard disk so I restarted the laptop and the problem went away on that laptop. 30 minutes later I accessed another folder on the nas from the second laptop and the issue started on the second laptop. I closed things that were open like chrome, Firefox, paint and a few other things and the issue stopped. I opened that same folder on the nas again and the issue started again so I restarted the second laptop. After that I accessed that same folder from the second laptop. The issue didn't happen. That folder has a exe file which has compressed files so I uncompressed to the desktop. The spinning next to the mouse pointer circle came and went for 3 times after the uncompression finished. I closed the exe file and I ran it again and I again uncompressed to the desktop and again the spinning circle came and went for 3 times after the uncompression finished. I repeated what I did but this time no spinning circle showed when the uncompression finished. I want to know what is causing the problem and why the spinning circle will continue to come and go after I closed the nas folder
The simplest answer to this is that something is being searched for, something is being synchronized, something is being re-indexed or reloaded.
dsm version is DSM 6.2.4-2556 the smb is set to the default setting which is max smb3 and min smb2. unsure what you mean by smb 3 default enabled my network speed is fast
When browsing the network directories on the NAS, things need to be synced constantly. As SMB is a relatively slow protocol, you will notice these update cycles; on local it happens too fast to trigger the "background process busy" animation. Most of the time it will be sluggish and display the busy circle when loading PE resources, icons, or if an Antivirus is background scanning everything (Defender/MMSE/SCEP and Comodo are two examples of being very slow background scanners, sometimes).
