If you turn a 9 around it becomes six.
Are you then the owner of 3 Windows computers the devil will come for you.;)

This is the same Microsoft Marketing Department which decided SharePoint Workspace should be called SkyDrive Pro and later OneDrive for Business. Which decided to discontinue Media Center. Which decided Windows Mobile should be Windows Phone and later Windows Mobile again. And then decided that the mobile platform could survive with absolutely no advertising whatsoever. And decided that Windows 6.1 was Windows 7 and 6.2 was 8.

By comparison, calling the next version of Windows after 8.1 "Windows 10" is a stroke of genius.

What I recall is Microsoft claimed if they named it Windows 9, people would be confused and think it was nothing more than Windows 95, 98 or 98SE. All of which were “9” operating systems.

Right there the company we all know and love called all their users a bunch of imbeciles.

    From a Google search:
"When Microsoft announced its newest operating system last year, the surprise was not that it was coming, but that Windows would be skipping version 9 and heading straight to 10. When asked about Windows 10's name, Microsoft never really gave a clear answer.Jul 28, 2015"

Because they wanted a nice big gap between their failed Win 8.x OS and their hopefully successful Win 10 OS, a gap that convinced people 8.x and 10 were not related

Well to what i`m led to believe correct me please if i`m wrong but China holds a huge majority of the Microsoft Market. Anyway the number 9 in China is considered bad luck so i`m not sure if that had anything to do with it but i was also told that china had a bit of influence on the final release name for Windows 10 and that is why Microsoft skipped 9 and went from 8 to 10!. It also seems that every other os that comes out of Microsoft doesn`t turn out so well. I liked XP was a good os but Vista was a nightmare, Windows 7 was a Great os but not so much in Windows 8 and so on. Could be also Microsoft wanted to some how get it right and break the chains or the cycle per say with 10 considering Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 will be the last os release from Microsoft. I have Windows 10 Home x64 and i love it.

Bill Gates forgot to list 3.1, WFWG, Microsoft Bob, NT came in version 3 and 4, 98 in several versions, 8 and 8.1, etc.

Not sure I agree with the China theory. According to what I've read, 75% of pcs in China are running pirate Windows - Microsoft have thrown in the towel and decided to let them all have free Windows 10.
