uxtheme patcher can make that, is not anything about windows update, it's just a bug when you change themes,
that can also happen because your video card drivers where updating on the background by windows update and you turned off windows, thats another bug of windows 8, it's better to have automatic driver updates turned off at least until they fix that.

My updates all failed, but when I ran them a second time, they all installed perfectly. I also noticed that when I did a disk clean up after doing my updates, my PC froze when it was going through the Update Cleaner part.

All my updates installed perfectly. Considering a lot of people have horror stories all the time about patch Tuesday, I consider my self blessed

All December updates were failing, so I got fed up because I was also suffering from the "917" and "872" updates issues.
So I formatted the C: drive, installed Win 8 Pro again, ran ALL updates before activating and that was it.
All updates were successful and so was the activation in the end.

Yesterday, I got the black screen with flickering backlight after I rebooted to finish installing the December updates. I had to re-image.

I notice that kb2751352 was in the list of updates, which is odd because it came out in September and wasn't installed in the previous two batches of updates, all which installed without a hitch.

I'm going to hide it and try the rest again.

EDIT: I wonder if having your system set to skip the Start screen and boot directly into the desktop might be conflicting with the KB2751352 which is a fix for Start screen icons?

That update were installed on my Windows 8 ProWMC 64bit on Dec. 11. without any problem! And I also directly boot to the Desktop!

It's possible it come in conflict with some Apps which using main system settings of Windows 8. It's maybe also possible that fragment left from some installation, both Files/Folders and/or Registry Entree's trigger that. I all times check after an un-installing for files left and also check the registry, which has the effect that mys system is quite clean.

I had not tampered with system files and only used the clean kms activation since it was installed. The only thing I had done was a motherboard change, which Windows 8 accepted gracefully, only requiring reactivation.
Maybe the motherboard change left "something" in an unknown state.

Possible as I had startisback installed and experienced the flickering issue, did a system restore (which also took out startisback), updated and it worked.

After much trial and error and re-imaging, I've narrowed down the culprit to the IE10 cumulative update (KB2761465) . The rest of the updates install fine.

Actually, the root of the problem is UltraUXThemePatcher. If you don't have the default windows theme set when you install a update that changes any of the theme files, you will get the black screen. You will have to reinstall the theme patcher again so the best thing to do is set the basic windows theme, uninstall UXThemePatcher, reboot, install the windows updates, reboot and then install the theme patcher again. :weeping:
