You can actually stay with the MAK key for now. Automatic updates will work. However, only retail installs are allowed to upgrade to 8.1 through store. My advice would be to either get a retail license or look around for some ISOs in the repo which you can use to upgrade.
If you have a KMS key, you can install it. What's the point though, since KMS requires reactivation every six months? I would advise you to stay with the MAK key instead.

    Cheers.

    thank you Pun,
if i use a ISO to update i will lose the activation right ?
i mean when windows will update from 8 to 8.1 i need to reactivate, and the keys are not accepted on 8.1 only on 8 !

Yes, upgrading through ISO will require you to activate again. You need a new key (or activator *cough cough*)

MSDN and Technet Retail keys are good for upto 10 activations. It's not a MAK key. May be he is talking about Windows 8 Enterprise MAK key which has 20 activations.

Irrespective of that, it's still a MAK. Technet and MSDN keys are, for all practical intents and purposes, retail. So... coming back to point: You still have to get that ISO.

or like our previous IT, we are sitting at over 15,000 activations for the upper office of an office suite that isn't being used there. Either big company or Big dummy. Our case is big dummy! lol

Yes. You entered the WMC key, which is a retail key, and that replaced the MAK key. The activation type of the system is therefore Retail, and is eligible for upgrade via Store. The only reason this works is because Microsoft didn't block the MAK -> WMC path, even though that's against the license.

Of course it will give an error. You have tried to install a key for Windows 8 (which you are allowed to use) onto an install of Windows 8.1 (which you are not authorised to use). This would be like using a Toyota Corolla's key to enter a Prius. :p (Bad analogy but I hope you get my idea)

i do got your analogy :), let me guess are you a Toyota driver :)
so there is no way of having Win 8.1 activated with our MAK keys?
so the company will have no update to the 8.1 ?
btw we dont drive Toyota at work :)
