I have Windows Server 2012 installed and enabled the Essentials Experience role. When installing, I went with the recommended settings and later found out that when setting up, the server took over handling DNS. If the server is a Domain controller, does it also have to have DNS? If not, how can I turn it off once configured? I can find the option but it is greyed out now once it has been set up. Thanks

You can remove "DNS Server" as role (Server Manager - Manage - Remove Roles and Features). I haven't checked if you have to correct DNS on the clients also - of if that happens automatically.

I ended up just putting a secondary DNS on the client computers. The sever can handle DNS that way but if the server is down, the client computers will still have internet access.
