After doing some testing in Virtual Machines over the last couple of weeks i finally gave 7 a shot on my real hardware. Unfortunately it was a rather short encounter because there is something that makes it 100% unusable for me. This cannot be explained in two sentences, so let me start at the beginning: Under Windows, my monitor can do resolutions from 640x480 to 2048x1536. (SONY G520 based model on a GTX260.) The default-available resolutions in XP and Vista are 640x480 to 1800x1440. The available refreshrate minimum/maximum for the screen is 59Hz to 170Hz. (ActualMonitorSpec: H=30-130kHz, V=48-170Hz.) Which refresh rates are available depends on the chosen resolution. Check out the detailed list to see what resolution can run at what refreshrates and read on below. Code: Resolution Color Depth Refresh Rate 640 x 480 8-bit 100 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 120 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 140 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 144 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 150 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 170 Hz 640 x 480 8-bit 60 1440 16-bit 75 Hz 1800 x 1440 32-bit 75 Hz As you can see, quite a lot of resolutions and different refreshrates. Under 7, the only resolution where 60Hz is available is 640x480. All other resolutions have ONLY 75Hz and 85 Hz available. (With or without monitor 'driver' installed.) It is like that right after the desktop comes up for the first time, (meaning on a 100% untouched system), and it stays that way even after i install the nvidia driver. (Mainboard doesnt need any.) It also stays that way when i remove all drivers (including the one that windows installed) with DriverSweeper and then reinstall the latest nvidia driver. No matter what i do, the available refresh rates are always 75Hz and 85Hz only. So the question is: Where the hell are my refresh rates under Windows7? And what am i supposed to do to get them as i had them under XP and Vista?
Is there an INF file for your monitor available? If windows identifies your screen simply as "Plug and play Monitor" then windows is not aware of the features of your screen (a newer screen would not have the INF file included for it included in windows, since it came out after windows was released), or for some reason it can not poll the monitor to get the parameters of it. Try to get the monitor "driver" aka INF file for your screen, and "update" the driver for your screen using it. This will tell windows exactly what the screen is capable of, and as long as your video card supports it, it will let you select it.
control panel > appearance and personalization > display > adjust resolution > advanced settings > monitor 'tab' should do it..
Because i need these other refresh rates for certain apps and games. Yes, but like i said, it makes no difference. Same as above. There is, but it makes no difference. (Windows polls the capability-data via DDC anyway so all the 'driver' would effectively do is add the name.) You dont understand. The other refresh rates are not there. Under 7 they dont appear in ANY menu (Games, Windows, DriverPanel, etc.), hence i cannot select them either. (Which is the very problem im having.)
Sorry, missed the part about the INF file/driver. Do you have another monitor you can plug in to test? I had a friend who had the same issue, and it turned out it was because the video card drivers he was using were not official vista or win7 drivers, when a newer driver came out things were fine. If you have the same issue with a second monitor then that could be your issue. Also, since win7 is not "officially" out yet, there are a lot of "beta" drivers out for 7 that might not work fully/correctly.
Well, i do have another CRT but it also is a SONY G520 based model so it would probably be the same. The driver, well, its possible that this is the problem because the driver that Windows installs by default is really a nvidia too. (185.xx generation.) It doesnt come with the nvidia control panel, but when i uninstall it the graphic options revert to the usual 'Standard This and Standard That', where you cant choose any specific values at all. (Which is what you normally get when only the generic VGA win-driver is being used.) Another thing that speaks for a 'not-quite-perfected' driver is the energy saving feature thing, where the card is supposed to enter 2D mode when there is no significant load. With the 185 driver installed by Windows this works just as fine as under Vista, but with the two latest versions from nvidias website the card always goes back up to full after one second, even if there is no more than the empty desktop. So the only thing i can do is waiting for a new driver? This certainly sucks. And if thats normal for 7, what do all the other people with nvidia cards do? Dont they miss their other refresh rates?
Check here. NVIDIA Control Panel > Change Resolution > Refresh Rate Have not found Windows GUI way to change this There is also setting from Unattend.xml that can push a refresh rate, if you want to force it on future installs.
I am using one of the Nvidia 9800+ 1 gig graphic cards with win 7 x64, and I have all the resolution and refresh settings that I should have. Now I'm a bit confused, lol. As far as I know the Nvidia drivers are "production" grade drivers, especially since when I downloaded mine I think it said Windows Vista/Windows 7 on the download. What card are you using?
Like i said, the other refresh rates are not there. They simply do not exist under 7, in none of the menus or config panels, be that in Games, in the various display-related menus of Windows, in the ControlPanel of the driver, under Display/VideoModes in Everest, you name it. They just arent available. All i get is 75 and 85, except for 640x480, which also has 60Hz available. But thats still merely 3 out of 11, because 640x480 should normally have 60, 70, 73, 75, 85, 100, 120, 140, 144, 150, and 170Hz available. And thats the very dilemma; even though i should have countless different refresh rates to choose from Win7 gives me only three for 640x480 and two for the entire rest...
OK, then should I assume you already tried NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage Custom Resolutions > Allow Modes Not Exposed By The Display Then Click "Create" > and configure you settings
Thats good to hear. I have a spare 9800GT laying around here so i could try if it makes a difference. (Come to think of it, i also still have an old 850XTPE i could give a shot. But on second thought, what would i want with such an old card in Win7?) It does say vista/win7, thats why it is kind of curious that there would still be such massive problems. Right now i have a GTX260 installed...
Yep, that was one of the first things i tried. Nothing appeared though, and i honestly wasnt in the mood of setting up dozens of resolution profiles manually. (After all it works perfectly under XP and Vista so there must be something wrong that needs fixing rather than a workaround.)
but have you really ried the monitor driver? cause the nvidia drivers are for the grafical card only and not for the monitor itself, like sirsilentbob mentioned.
I wish I could help more, but everything I can think of you seem to have covered already by either your own doing or by suggestions given by users here. In this case, it does not seem that the INF file will make a difference, because normally the monitor communicates its configurable settings to the graphics card. Only time I've had one NOT do that myself was when it was connected through a rackmount KVM sharing it between a bunch of other computers.
AYUP, mine is running monitor.sys aka Generic PNP Monitor, that is with NVIDIA drivers I got from Windows Update. I checked the TV companies website, but they do not offer drivers for my flatty. That is why I needed the custom setting to push 60 refresh rate at 1280x1024. It was a one-time thing for me.
Of course. But it doesnt make a difference. Like i said, Windows already polls the capabilities-data via DDC anyway, so all the so-called 'driver' really does in effect is adding the 'friendly' name of the display (=make&model in plain words) to the registry entries. Its purely cosmetic...
Yeah, i know my way around computers so it is rarely that i have to ask for help. But i admit this one really stumped me. It makes no sense at all...
Out of curiosity i just had a look at the driver, (190.62WHQL for Vista&7), and found that there is even a special 'modes.txt' included. Frankly it looks fine to me...all the refresh rates are there so in my opinion the conclusion to draw is that it has to be a problem with Windows7 after all... (Especially if you consider that the same driver works fine under Vista and there are no special parameters for Win7 in the INF.)
