Anybody tried a most minimalistic Win7 Embedded image that would support Vmware View 5 client?

Such client does not run as bare metal, and to me it is pointless to have the full Win7 desktop to connect elsewhere tio run something else. I know there are definitely cases where it could be useful, just not for me

So I need minimalistic desktop (that does not really need constant maintenance, possibly even PXE booted) to run the View client

    Hi sebus

I've downloaded both images, but neither works.

With HP t5740 one, load it into VM and it will install but it stops at the last stage informing the system image cannot be installed on this computer.

With Wyse image, I followed your note. Use physdiskwrite to write par1.img to the drive, but when reboots, it never loads, instead it will just hang there. Also try it on a local computer with a 60GB hard drive, still hang there, same with the VM. Later I tried to delete all the .sys files dated April 2011, but it still won't boot. It shows a BSOD with hardware malfunction informed.

    Any suggestion to fix this?

    Many thanks!

More tricks to get it working (I did not write all of it above)

physdiskwrite will write the image starting at offset 0
    That will never boot machine.

Once it is written to a disk (ie virtual vmdk), I used ghost32 (booting to WinPE) to make partition to image, then clean the disk, created partition & restored image to (just created) partition

Ofcourse also partition needs to be activated & bootloader installed on the drive

    bootsect /nt60 driveletter

I does work well on ESXi, as I use it for a very simple task (did NOT try it on Hyper-V)

This are the ones I disabled:

Hi sebus, you are a genius. Thank you so much for such detailed instructions. Will try them all in weekend due to busy work at load.

    Again, thank you!

    Hello, sebus!
Tried to make image from wyse and hp as you described, but no luck. wyse image stuck in infinite loading loop and hp image i can't install at all.
Can I ask you to pack vmdk file and send it to me?
    Thanks,

What loop? Do you get an error of any kind? Reboot?

Where are you installing them? Vmware?

I think Wyse image is way less bas*****ed then HP (which is full of HP stuff), hence better to use

The only other issue with Wyse image is to eventually replace Default profile with Administrator's one (as Default is also pretty locked, so some things do not work etc)

You need to reset administrator password & disable admin auto logon

You also need to stop (Start decimal 4) any services that have wyse in the name in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services

All the above is done while booted with WinPE

    Try again, it is fun...

Just re-created it from BRB0_0827_4096 in Workstation 8:

    1. restore the par1.img with physdiskwrite to VM with IDE HD
    2. create image of the restored partition with Ghost32 to image
    3. clean IDE HD with diskpart
    4. create primary partition with diskpart leaving at least 100 Mb of free space
    5. Restore Ghost image BACK onto the newly created partition
    6. make the restored partition active
    6. bootsect /nt60 c:
    7. mount registry hive c:\windows\system32\config\system & stop 4 wyse services
    8. rename few drivers in c:\windows\system32\drivers
    9. edit unattened in c:\windows\panther (you can change administrator password here)
    10. wait till machine build itself
    11. reboot to WinPE again & disable autoadmin logon in HKLM\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon & any policies you want
    12. login as administrator & (if you want) disable the filter (shortcuts are on the desktop)
    13. uninstall any unrelated software (but for this you need to adjust any references to Z:\ in registry)

    Done

Ofcourse it will NOT work if you just boot the iso.
Extract wim & apply it to the vhd (or whatever disk format you are using)

I thought the fact that it identified it was "not a Dell computer" was why it shutdown, not that it was booted from the ISO. Anyway, I tried extracting the contents of the WIM to a VDI and made it Active and wrote the NT5 MBR to it and it just hangs with a blank screen. If I write the grub4dos MBR to the VDI, that boots fine but if I try and chainloader /ntldr from that, it just hangs the same.

I thought the problem might be the ntldr, which is 262KB and dated 2006, as maybe it's designed for booting from ISO/CD rather than HDD, so I overwrote it with the 244KB 2008 one from my XP SP3 installation, but that didn't make any difference.

I done it in Workstation 8 with no problems at all. It is only XP (XPE_ENG_A05.wim), so in fact you could even do just xcopy & then restore bootloader (I done it with bootsect /nt52 c: ), nothing to it really

Exactly, the ONLY action while booting from CD/ISO on NON-DELL PC will be an error message & shutdown (I do not know what else you would expect...)
