    Hey IBM,

I found one of your threads on another forum (winworld)

Now I have this release but also another

I decided to do a compare, lots of differences but one that caught my eye .. Disk6 - WRITE.EXE

The version in the set you posted as genuine contains this at offset 2D82F of WRITE.EXE: "version 1.03"
The version I compared it to contains this at offset 2D82F: "version 1.04"

So the SHA1's you declared are either an earlier release or a beta?

I also found some spelling mistakes in a text file the newer one had corrected. You say you verified this so any comment?

Curiously, the set you verified .. the boot sector was created by IBM DOS 3.2 ("IBM 3.2"), the set I have was created by MS-DOS 3.0 ("MSDOS3.0"). Could we be looking at some form of OEM vs. Retail? I have same issue with Windows 1.01, 2 sets the files in this case on the disks are identical however .... just the disks formatted / prepared on a different OS.

    Any thoughts?

My dumped one is from original disk not modified one from BA.
(Unfortunately I lost original disk. But this must be from Microsoft Retail.)

    Boot ID:MS-DOS 3.0 ("MSDOS3.0") <-- This is modified image.
    I don't know why.
But according to BA, any user still seems to distribute modified diskimage.

I disagree about it been modified. Just because it doesn't match your original does not make it modified by 3rd party.

It includes for example a spelling mistake in the readme file. I find it hard to believe somebody edited there original disk to correct this, and modified it 2 days after the date of yours. And the correction of an obviously wrong version number (last min error spotted...)

Much more likely the first release was rushed (maybe to meet OEM deadline) and the issues were corrected for there retail market ones.

Windows 1.01 - same issue, 2 images same content but differences in disk format leed me to be believe OEM and Retail instead of modified as in that case file dates/times still correct.

A 3.5" version of Windows 1.04? Were 3.5" floppies even around then?

Can you stick them somewhere for me?

You 5.25" version matches mine, which I believe to be official version.

Anyway I don't contribute modified disk image but dumped image with no modified one if believe or not.
At least my dumped disk (1.04) is verified because I compared it with other users from BA.
If not believable, the best way is to buy it and dump it.

An inspiring thread. I wonder what are my chances of making this run in a VM. I have hardware of that era that probably still works, but not ready to dig out of storage quite yet.

Look at the root of which disk? No point in been cryptic.
I ask because I respect your opinion but stating the other release is home made without stating why doesn't help.

I've stated evidence that mine is genuine. I'm not stating yours isn't I believe both are, but I believe your is older and got reissued due to oversights like version numbers and

    Ok, I understand.
By the way, I found later version of 1.04 on PCJS.
Only BOOT-ID is modified, but I can recover (restore) easily.

The version of write on that modified PCJS site reports version 1.04.

There is definitely more than one release of 1.04 and I am convinced the 2 version we have are both genuine releases.

As for only boot ID been modified ... hard to say that for certain.

    Boot ID corrected:

So now we have 3 versions. This appears to be the IBM formatted version updated.

Files appear now to be identical to the MSDOS formatted set (apart from DISK7 still containing the PIF file).

I guess that proves that 1.04 got re-issued.

EDIT: Infact DISK5 in that set refers to MSDOS.SYS instead of the IBM DOS version so that's even odder. Not sure what the boot ID should be as the "Non System disk is different to MSDOS3.0 sets, so not MSDOS3.0 bootsector.

    Any thoughts now? ;)

    I've checked this image.

I'm sure Disk 5 / 6 are dumped from original disk.
Boot ID of Disk 5 is MSDOS3.2 (hehehe)

    SHA1:ed37cff589928c1d386f31d04ee0bbb7f9ed741c / Disk 5

At least BOOT ID:MSDOS3.0 / MSDOS3.1 is fake (made by any user.)
