Does this still work even if you are not logged into a MSA in 8.1 before upgrading?

No need for a serial after upgrading .. from 8.1 from my end. A clean install from the esd, skip the key entries (twice) and voila - activated on desktop.

EDIT: This on a local account with no MSA - I realise this is not quite what you were after.

How to enable Windows 10 RTM (My working method):

Background: I started with a license upgrade purchased at the launch of Windows 8 to 29 euro and used until Windows 8.1 Update 3 and running.

The first thing I did was install Windows 8.1 Update 3 and activation with the key professional in my possession. After I connected to my Microsoft account and I launched the installation of Windows 10 as an upgrade (I was not asked to enter any product code).

Finished upgrading Windows 10 resulted operated with a key retail (the same one that was put on the blacklist by microsoft).

Checked it, I formatted the hard drive, I installed Windows 10 from scratch and I logged in with the key used to put on the blacklist by microsoft and voila all activated.

My question to you the forum is as follows: Microsoft now to activate the license is based on an algorithm included in microsoft account?

Sorry for the imperfect English. Greetings from Italy. Alessio

Does anyone know if Windows 8.1 Pro activated via KMS stays activated with the Windows 10 upgrade? If it does, does it keep however many days you have left?

technically no it is not. But anything between now and the 29th can be patched in Windows update. Unless they do a total revamp or major butt fix. I don't expect huge changes that effect users other than maybe KMS users etc.
