@dhjohns Thanks for the triple post. First: I couldn't have the quoted text in the first post if I had not aready enabled the feature. Second: Going to the Ubuntu Entry in the store tells me to upgrade to a newer version of Windows (LTSB! There *is* no newer version!) Third: This version actually just installed automatically when your ran bash from the command line - Which is where I got the output above from.
You are right. You absolutely need the MS Store for the Linux subsystem to work. Since LTSB is not made for consumers there is no reason to include it.
Except that it didn't used to require the store, and in fact, on older builds of Windows, *continues* to not need it. (And it functions!) And the store can be installed easily enough.
Nothing to do with store! MS just disabled the beta version that was included in LTSB 2016 by "mistake" to start with!
No, it is NOT a restriction. The kernel does NOT support it (it was never meant to be there!) in first place Upgrade to version that are supported 1703/1709
puzzled as to why people would install LTSB if they want new features, especially WSL which is still being aggressively developed. 1607 version is quite lacking compared to what's in 1709, and what's in rs4 will be much better. In other words, you wouldn't want this even if it was available.
