Is there any1 here whos having retail usb image with windows version that implemented install.wim bigger than 4gb's ? I remember having 1607 version on my retail ms usb and it had install.wim inside instead of install.esd that you get by using mct. So my question is if somewhere after 1607 they changed install.wim to be bigger than fat32 support what did they do with retail usb's ? Is it formatted ntfs nowdays or they split it to install.swm or they changed it to install.esd ? It would be nice to know what the usb actually looks like by this i mean win ver, boot.wim size, and what type of install.wim/swm/esd is there compared to MCT because i had install.wim when mct creates install.esd and im curious if they kept it this way.

  2. Why dont you Use Ventoy as USB Boot.

Its from curiosity standpoint. The same sentence people said about ms usb's before and it had install.wim inside instead of install.esd and it looked like it was made with mct but it had install.wim thats why i want to see if they kept it this way on those usb's despite making install.wim larger than 4gb's.

Thanks for informative response. I will gladly learn something new but i would also like to see actual usb contents like i said from curiosity standpoint. So if there is any1 with this kind of usb it would be nice to see it.

    1. this needs some member having bought the USB
    2. that same member has to have the knowledge about how to find out it's content and how to determine what SKUs are inside the install.esd files

I could easily have posted, this is the content of the USB and post some bogus or correct info, how would you know the difference?

The way i analyzed those usb's was to check sha-1 sum of each install.wim or boot.wim files. The way its done with 1607 microsoft usb that i own is that they made usb with media creation tool option "both x86 and x64" and replaced install.esd with install.wim from 1607 msdn iso. I know its from msdn iso because i compared sha-1 of those files. Now as far as i know after 1803 install.wim is larger than 4gb's so im curious what they did:
    a) changed file system to ntfs
    b) changed install.wim to install.esd
    c) split install.wim to install.swm

Why do i have the feeling that we, or some other member, had this exact same discussion, also hung up on the install.wim origin:thinking:

NTFS formatted USB can only boot legacy bios, can't imagine an original windows 10 store USB only boots legacy bios.

They contain install.esd. SWM actually is meant for using multiple cd's/dvd's and the only time i saw MSFT using them was for Vista on CD.

I think its possible to boot from ntfs with uefi at least on my mobo its possible maybe older ones have problems. And even if you are right then i would like to confirm it myself by looking at the actual stick contents. Lets hope there is some1 willing to make screenshoot of it.

dejavu for me as well, I might recall it badly that it was someone looking to sell fake windows 10 usb keys but had no idea how to make them look "original" - like ffs if you're gonna make quick bucks of the back of others, maybe you should stop being a cheap ass and buy 1 (one) original key yourself :mocking:

I doubt any1 would try to sell it as their design is the same and very original. I have 1607 myself just looking for higer versions to find out what they did to compensate fat32 and install.wim larger than 4gb's. In my case it looks like stick made with mct with install.esd replaced by install.wim from msdn iso's

Ye but those were threads about removing write protection from my usb and not about contents of the actual usb. Right now i want to know how they dealt with install.wim beeing larger than 4gb's post 1803 cuz my stick is 1607. Yes i removed the usb lock but i have the files that were there before saved. And after analyzing files and comparing them to what mct makes it surprised me that they add different images on official usb rather than mct where 95% on forums says the usb image is exact same as mct..
