I currently have Windows 10 with an SSD for a boot drive and Two 3TB Hardrives in a RAID1 via (Intel Raid RST Bios). I would like to switch to Windows 10 "Storage Spaces" Due to easy cross compatibility for future builds. The problem is to create a new storage space my Both of my RAID1 will have to be reformatted and all data lost. Is there any way (without purchasing a 4th drive for backup) to create the new RAID1 via Storage Spaces without losing DATA?
Bump? I know that intel RST allows you to create a new RAID1 with a drive that already has data on it.
You'd have to move the data off of the Intel RAID, then create the storage space. The drives need to be formatted to enter the Storage Space.
They should appear unallocated. Either way it does not matter since Storage Spaces will delete any format partition anyways but unallocated/unformated drives are displayed immediately as viable drives for a Storage Pool, and also in PowerShell (which I use on my 6 drive Storage Pool on my server). To OP: You cannot create a Storage Pool/Space without losing everything on the drives you're using, and for good reason. Btw, Storage Spaces is absolutely fantastic, especially with the new v3.1 ReFS you can format the drives in.
Is Storage Spaces like Linux software RAID? Can it be used to set-up a RAID0 array with 3 drives (assuming I install Windows to one and leave the other two blank, assuming that I need to do this post-install)? How does it perform compared to FakeRAID (more specifically, Intel RST)?
