Hello Gents and Lassies. Is there a workaround for this issue:I installed my initial Windows 10 Tech Preview 9926 to a WD 1TB USB External Drive using WinToUSB v2.2. Although the damn thing was slow, I was still able to test it on my SonyVAIO VPCF136FM/B Quad Core 1.7Ghz 8Gb Memory USB 3.0. I was able to download the 10041 ESD Update but it would always give an error 0x80020471 something (not sure) and flashes the "Try Again" button every time. Anyways, after a thousand retries, decided to convert the 10041 ESD file to an ISO using the wonderful instructions found here at MDL! But when tried to update with the ISO it gave the finger and said that "Updating Windows 10 Tech Preview installed on an External drive is not allowed" BS! Anybody found a way around this. Appreciate all the help. I may end up doing a clean install using WinToUSB but that would mean that would have install all my software all over again.
I had the same problem and could NOT solve it. Seems to be that WinToUSB mark the OS as Windows To Go Driver and that could not be upgraded. I created my one from an running 9926 and that was working well. I also has an 2. from Laptop running initial 11036 and that works too but impossible to upgrade that one to 10041. I upgraded that Laptop OS 10036 to 10041 without any problem and created than again with WinToUSB a 'new' W2G and works fine too! Only upgrade directly on that USB drive to 10041 is impossible, for whatever reasons. That applies for my own computers and not any one else's, just to note! What others may have for experiences, I don't know and I even didn't care about in any means.
Looks like both you and I are scrrreweddd for the moment! lol. But thanks for the response. I was thinking maybe I make an image of this partition using Macrium Reflect and then convert it to VHD and run it using Hyper-V and see if it upgrades. It's probably easier to do a clean install but what the heck, it's probably worth a try, nothing else to do anyway.
Yeah, had the same problem with WinToGo and an Install running from a .VHD on a USB drive. Was never able to fix them, But making new versions only took a few hours. And its always nice to have a clean install. Just make sure you've backed up first.
