I can't figure out what is doing this. sometimes I can hear my hard drive crunching and there will be a floppy drive seek.

this happens if I am using the computer or if I am not. windows defender / security essentials real time scanning is disabled and I'm not running any other virus scan

the only thing that comes to mind is indexing service or windows search (whatever it is called now) but I thought that did its business when the computer is idle

Disable the Windows Search in Services and check if that helps!
Or maybe it's the Defrag shedule?
